FINAL FLIGHT 12" Patch from Artist Tim Gagnon

NON EST AD ASTRA MOLLIS E TERRIS VIA "There is no easy way from the Earth to the Stars."

On October 28, 2003 the Astronauts Memorial Space Mirror monument was rededicated in honor of the Columbia STS-107 crew. Dr. Jon Clark who lost his wife in that tragic accident said in part: “we have to decide if we are going to be a space faring or space fearing people for these surely will not be the last names added to this monument.”

On October 31, 2014, the VSS Enterprise, a SpaceShipTwo experimental spaceflight test vehicle operated by Virgin Galactic, suffered a catastrophic in-flight breakup during a test flight and crashed in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, California.,Co-pilot Michael Alsbury was killed and pilot Peter Siebold was seriously injured.

On July 24, 2019 the Board of Directors of the Astronaut Memorial Foundation voted to add Alsbury's name to the Space Mirror Memorial. This has been done and will be unveiled in a special re-dedication ceremony on Saturday, January 25, 2020.

This honor necessitated an update to my FINAL FLIGHT 12 inch Commemorative patch. Besides just adding his name, I wanted to update the look of the design as well. The Earth is shown at night with city lights sparkling below and stars above. Over the ocean the Astronaut Symbol points the way forward, towards dawn of a new day and beyond Earth to the stars.
