Top Five Gifts to Celebrate Earth Day with The Space Store
Every April 22nd, Earth Day invites us to reflect on the beauty and fragility of our planet. It’s a time to celebrate Earth’s natural wonders and a reminder to make conscious efforts to keep our environment beautiful.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to raise public awareness about environmental issues. Inspired by the growing environmental movement and events like the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, Nelson organized a nationwide “teach-in” to highlight pollution and encourage environmental protection.
There were few legal mechanisms to protect the environment prior to the 1970s, and industrial pollution was pervasive. To start the push for public policy change, Senator Nelson aimed to bring attention to these issues.
At The Space Store, Earth Day holds a special place in our hearts. Earth is where our passion for the cosmos begins, and we try to see it as a unique and special dot in the expanse of our solar system, just like the astronauts do.
This Earth Day, we’re excited to feature a curated selection of space-themed products that pay tribute to Earth’s beauty and the spirit of environmental stewardship.
Here are a few Earth Day favorites from our shop (that also make great gifts):
1. Earth Plush by Celestial Buddies
If you’re a collector of plushies, there’s no better way to celebrate Earth Day than with the Celestial Buddies Earth Plush. This is a great toy to use for introducing kids to astronomy or conservation.
Fun fact: One of these Celestial Buddies traveled to the International Space Station with SpaceX’s dummy astronaut Ripley on board the Dragon spacecraft and was dubbed a “super high tech zero-g indicator” by SpaceX.
2. Earth Futuristic Retro Poster
The Lynx Art Collection explores a speculative future in which humanity has colonized the stars, with a number of fictional advertisements styled in a tongue-in-cheek homage to 1950s and 60s commercials and propaganda posters.
This particular poster is one of our favorites, because it tells a whole story in just a few words. “Come tour the home of our ancestors!” it says cheerfully, just under an image of a fragmented Earth.
Chilling, but also fun. Another great reminder to cherish and take care of the planet we have now, while we still can!
3. Earth Cross-Section Nesting Bowls
Each ceramic bowl in this four-piece set is decorated with artwork representing a different layer of the Earth. Both practical and visually interesting, these bowls are a beautiful way to display your enthusiasm for science in the kitchen. They’re a great way to teach kids while they help in the kitchen or to start a conversation when serving guests.
4. Earth, Mars, and Moon to Scale Marble Kit
Made from recycled glass, this mini display is the perfect addition to any space-themed collection. The kit includes geographically accurate representations of the Earth, Moon, and Mars, an educational insert card that can teach kids about scale and distance in space, and stainless steel stands for your desk or shelf.
Let’s round out our list with some fashion so you can wear your love of Earth and space out with you wherever you go. This design is a Space Store exclusive, designed and made to order in-house.
The story is even funnier than the design. We commissioned our artist to have three astronauts looking at the moon through a telescope. His first draft was three astronauts on the lunar surface, looking at earth through a telescope! When we saw his design, we had to go with it, and we think you’ll like it just as much as we did.
As enthusiasts of space exploration, we know that understanding the universe begins with appreciating the planet we launch from. Earth is our cradle, our spaceship, and our only home (at least for now).
NASA and other space agencies continue to study Earth from orbit to monitor climate change, weather patterns, and natural disasters. Satellites help us understand everything from polar ice melt to deforestation to ocean health. In many ways, space technology is key to Earth’s future. That’s why The Space Store is proud to promote products that help spread awareness and spark curiosity.
