Explore the Red Planet, captured in this highly-detailed 6” desktop globe from Astronomy magazine. Created exclusively for the Space & Beyond Box, this globe is available for a limited time. Just after America’s bicentennial, on July 20, 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 became the first spacecraft to touch down on Mars and succeed with its mission. The Viking program, conceived long beforehand, sent the Viking 1 lander and an orbiter along with it, as well as similar spacecraft in the Viking 2 lander and orbiter. This grand program opened up our scientific investigation of the Red Planet like nothing before, and it sent back the first detailed images of Mars captured from the planet’s surface. The orbiters conveyed the landers to Mars and then acted as communications relays for data from the ground, as well as conducted unique science experiments of their own.  Vikings 1 and 2 revolutionized our understanding of the Red Planet. They detected numerous geologic forms linked to water, and caused an explosion in understanding that Mars hosted large amounts of water on its surface in the past Now you, too, can explore the Red Planet using this comprehensive data and 203 of the most notable surface features identified and labeled. They range from familiar features like craters and mountains to less well known like chaoses, labyrinthi, scopuli, and sulci. Each globe is made of long-lasting durable plastic with just a single seam between hemispheres and comes with a clear acrylic display base and informational flyer.
